Transition to a new environment - dealing with change

Your first year is an exciting time and there is a lot to learn in a short period.  Saint Mary’s University has people and resources on campus to help in your adjustment to University life and to help you succeed in your studies.

We recommend you start by attending Orientation Events - they are fun and a great way to meet new people from all over the world.  There are no initiation events so come out and meet new friends, learn and enjoy yourself. Visit the Student Orientation website to find out about upcoming programs for starting in September or January.

Personal Issues

Guidance counsellors were familiar to you in high school for listening and assisting you with personal problems.  We employ a staff of professional counsellors in our Counselling Office, located on the 4th floor of the Student Centre.

Careers and Employment

If you are seeking guidance with respect to careers and employment, we have three offices that can assist.

  • The Student Employment Centre offers assistance in resume writingand job search.  You can use it as a resource for job postings for part-time employment while you’re student and full time employment after graduation.
  • The Co-op Office offers a full range of support services for students enrolled in a co-operative education program.  Co-op combines alternating semesters of full time employment with academic study, beginning at the end of your second year of university.  All of these offices are located on the 4th floor of the Student Centre.
